What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is a natural state of relaxed concentration and awareness that allows behaviours to change in a positive and permanent way. During hypnosis the self-critical conscious mind is bypassed whilst alternative acceptable ways of thinking are established. However overall control and awareness is always maintained, so for example a smoker who comes in to quit smoking but is not committed to that goal, cannot be forced to do so.

The hypnotic state is one of the natural states in which the brain operates in all people every day. It exists between full consciousness and the dream state. During hypnosis the subconscious, which is primarily concerned for the client's health and welfare is allowed to act without the inhibiting effects of the more critical and evaluative conscious mind.

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy allows the development of a supportive and caring relationship between the client and the therapist. Psychotherapy focuses on current specific problems or behaviours and/or deep-seated personal issues which may then be resolved to bring deeper understanding and insight.

The changes brought about by Hypnosis and by Psychotherapy allow life to be lived more fully and more pleasurably. The work done and the learning achieved make it far easier to deal with any problems that may occur in the future.

The self-confidence that is achieved by tackling and resolving a problem or challenge from either current life or further in our past can make a great deal of difference to the how we can view the future and ourselves.

The basic principles of therapy

The basic principle of my therapeutic approach is that change is possible and is happening anyway. Within each of us we have the tools and resources to bring about a desired change. However, we do not always know how to use these tools and resources. We also are not fully aware of issues in our lives or our pasts that may be affecting how we cope with problems or new challenges.

Hypnotherapy and psychotherapy work to activate these resources to initiate change. Once this is done we know that we have done the work for ourselves and this gives us a powerful message about our capacity to overcome and change undesirable aspects of our lives. This process is equally effective and affirming for adults and children alike.
