Cranial osteopathy

Cranial Osteopathy

Cranial osteopathy was developed by Dr William G Sutherland in the early 20th century. The human skull is not merely one solid, immoveable bone but in fact 22 bones that are joined together like a very complicated three dimensional jigsaw puzzle. Sutherland hypothesised that the cranial bones, sacrum, brain, spinal cord and the membranes around them all possess subtle and differing movements that, with practice can be felt (palpated). Any abnormal movements can identified and corrected using a number of subtle treatment techniques.

The concept that the skull is linked to the pelvis and sacrum via the vertebral column and spinal cord means that just about any problem can be treated using purely cranial Osteopathy (not just headaches and sinus pain!). However, in most cases a combination of structural and cranial Osteopathy is the most appropriate and effective treatment method.
